Our 2010 Supporters

Thank you to ExxonMobil for their grants to The Dinner Garden! They provide grants to The Dinner Garden as a monetary match to the volunteer hours Georgiana Wells and her ExxonMobil crew donate to The Dinner Garden. So Georgiana packs up seeds for us, and ExxonMobil provides the cash to mail them to our gardeners!

Tomato Bob donated a bunch of fun seeds to The Dinner Garden this year. They have already been packed up and shipped out! We have purchased seeds from Tomato Bob in the past because they have a great selection, and they have great specials! Go check them out!

Thank you to CSNStores.com for their donation The Dinner Garden! When preparing fresh vegetables from the garden for dinner, pull up some bar stools and get the whole family to help. Cooking a healthy dinner with the whole family is the best quality time you can spend.

Pepper Joe's Inc. sent us several varieties of hot pepper seeds to give away to those of you who like spicy peppers. At The Dinner Garden, we love seed vendors like Pepper Joe's. Gardening is interesting and fun because of the incredible variety of fruits and vegetables you can grow. Check out this website to see all the spicy peppers you could be growing right now!

Our thanks to Google, Inc. for their huge grant. This grant will help us spread the word about ending hunger through home and community gardening!

Thank you to Woody Deryckx of Gratitude Gardens for his donation of cash and several pounds of spinach, lettuce, and Swiss Chard seeds to The Dinner Garden. Our Dinner Gardeners love greens, so we have a lot to give out now!

Our friends at The Seed Kingdom have continued to donate to us in 2010! Our friend, Dave Abbott, at The Seed Kingdom is compassionate, helpful, and committed to ending hunger through home and community gardening. Thank you!

Sakata Seed donated a bunch of fruit and vegetable seeds to The Dinner Garden! We received a big donation from them last year and are happy to have another big donation this year! Their seeds perform really well for our gardeners! Sakata doesn't have a store where you can shop. They sell their seeds through distributors, like garden stores. Thank you, Sakata!

Golden Harvest Organics donated to us again this year! We received a lot of great organic seeds from them and are busy sending them out to our Dinner Gardeners! They carry an amazing variety of organic seeds, so if you're looking for organic seeds and have been disappointed by the options you have elsewhere, visit their website for some great seeds!

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has come through for The Dinner Garden in 2010. They sent thousands of heirloom seeds to us to distribute to our clients in the United States. In case you don't know, heirloom seeds are open-pollinated, natural, non-GMO seeds. They are seeds that come from plants that generation after generation have been propagated from the seeds of their ancestors, meaning they haven't been hybridized with other plant varieties or genetically modified. So you can eat a tomato today that tastes the same as it did 150 years ago! It also means you can grow six different kinds of corn, twenty varieties of peppers, fifteen types of eggplant, and a host of other really cool vegetables and fruits. Pretty cool, eh? Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds sells seeds online at http://rareseeds.com. They sell 1400 unique varieties of seeds, and their website is like a walk through an old country town. You will see veggies you have never even imagined. You won't be able to resist trying several different kinds! If you live near Springfield, Missouri you can stop in to their actual store and shop there.

123 Partnership

The Dinner Garden has partnered with two organizations, World Food Garden and Ample Harvest, to provide support to our clients and to promote food security for all. We are calling it our 123 Partnership. For Step 1, The Dinner Garden provides free seeds, gardening support, and advice to individuals, families, and communities. For Step 2, World Food Garden provides planting information, like what and when to plant. They also have gardening mentors to answer gardening questions. Steps 1 and 2 provide the resources for our clients to grow food. They have the seeds, the information, and the assistance. Finally, for Step 3, Ample Harvest gives gardeners a way to donate their excess produce to food pantries.

With this partnership, we are helping people successfully garden to produce food for their families, so they have enough to eat. With their success will come an overabundance of produce. They can then donate the surplus to local food pantries.

Our 2009 Supporters

We love the San Antonio Food Bank for all the work they do. If you live in Bexar County or the surrounding areas, contact them if you are in need of immediate food assistance. When you talk to them, ask them about their cool training programs. The even offer certification programs in culinary arts, for free!

Our thanks to Citgo for providing $300 in fuel to support our efforts! We travel quite a bit, to ship seeds, to pick up supplies, to work with volunteers, and to attend seed distribution events, so we burn through a lot of gas! This donation really helps!

Thank you to the National Onion Association for the beautiful pamphlets filled with onion recipes! We hand these out at events around San Antonio. In you're in the area, stop by our booth at our next event to pick up one!

The Dinner Garden owes a huge debt of gratitude to our friends at The Val Verde Vegetable Company for their generous donation of 164 1/2 pounds of vegetable seeds! The even had someone drive the seeds 5 hours to get them here to San Antonio. We so much appreciate the Val Verde Vegetable Company's commitment to helping us end hunger. This enormous donation will help our gardeners out on their path to food security!

Thank you to Dave Swanson from Braise Culinary School for his recipe donation. Try it out on our Dinner Garden Recipes Page. This place has a traveling culinary school. Imagine learning to cook at a farm or in an orchard. How fun is that?

The Texas Department of Agriculture was really great when we asked them for recipes. They sent about 400 shiny full color recipe cards to us that we can hand out at our upcoming events. These recipe cards are beautiful and will attract a lot of attention to our table. If you are a foodie, their website will give you a lot of interesting info about all the fun things going on in Texas! Check them out!

The Dinner Garden is thrilled to announce that we are now working with Ample Harvest! Ample Harvest is a brilliant idea where home gardeners donate the produce they grow with people in need. Right now, they need people to spread the word about AmpleHarvest.org. If you have a food pantry near you, please contact them and ask them to register. When gardeners log on to Ample Harvest, they will find a nearby pantry where they can drop off fruit and veggies for people in need. They are relying on word of mouth to contact food pantries because so many are small and hard to find.

Sakata Seed donated 15 pounds of fruit and vegetable seeds to The Dinner Garden! This is a huge donation of hundreds of thousands of seeds. We so much appreciate the generosity of our friends at Sakata Seed! Thank you!

We are so lucky that the nice people at The Texas Nursery and Landscape Association allowed us to give a short presentation about The Dinner Garden at their monthly meeting. TNLA is a very well connected group that is essential for Texas nursery owners and landscapers. Their website and meetings have a ton of useful information that is helpful when operating a gardening or landscaping business here in Texas. After the presentation, their generous members donated $18.73 to our Seeds for School Kids program! Thanks, everyone!

Our friends at Farm to Family have converted an old school bus into a mobile farmer's market. The Magic Veggie Bus goes into the community to sell veggies and other good stuff right where people live and work! If you are Virginia around Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Louisa, or Chesterfield, you are so in luck! These folks are right in your area! If your neighborhood has need of fresh produce delivered to your church, school, neighborhood, or workplace send them an email. Imagine, you could shop on your lunch break with the Veggie Bus right in your work parking lot! You can watch them at this link! Mark and Suzy Lilly talk about us at the end and show off our seed packs!

Last night, Holly had the opportunity to introduce The Dinner Garden to the San Antonio Herb Society. Everyone was really friendly. These men and women are devoted to helping people learn to garden. You don't have to be an expert gardener. In fact, we spoke to many new gardeners who attend the meetings to learn how to garden. They were so supportive of The Dinner Garden's mission that they opened their purses and donated $49.50 to our Seeds for School Kids program! If you are a gardener or aspiring to be a gardener, we highly recommend checking out your local herb society. We had a great time at the meeting, and look forward to going back.

We had the opportunity to see Nick Vann from Nematode Nick's Organic Landscaping Company at The San Antonio Herb Society monthly meeting. Nick gave a great presentation on edible landscaping. We now have a lot of ideas to share for turning front yards into gardening spaces. If you need a fun, knowledgeable speaker for your event, call Nick and see if he is available!

The Dinner Garden wants to thank The Greenhouse Catalog for their generous donation of 200 seed starter trays. When we asked The Greenhouse Catalog if they could help us out with a donation, they sent us a donation that can only be described as amazing. We are really excited to get the seed starter pots. We are excited about these pots because we are partnering with The Time Dollar Community Connection to provide plants for their inner city gardening classes. These pots will make that task so much easier for us. If you are interested in getting a greenhouse for year round growing, check out their website. They have everything you need to build a greenhouse! While you are there, thank them for donating to The Dinner Garden!

You all know how The Dinner Garden is growing in leaps and bounds. We have been fortunate to have the support of the best companies around! So far this year, Sheffield's Seed Company has sent two big bags of Table King Squash to us, with the promise of several more to come. We are so happy to receive this donation! Squash is one of the seeds we send out the most because one seed can produce many pounds of food.

Golden Harvest Organics is generously donating rare heirloom and open pollinated vegetable seeds to our Dinner Garden Gardeners! Isn't that great? They said they are thrilled to see people in need growing these wonderful, nutritious plants. World Food Garden promotes the idea that individuals should plant personal gardens. Rather than count on food being shipped from hundreds or even thousands of miles away, we should simply grow that same food in our backyards. World Food Garden LogoWorld Food Garden contains the world's first map of small food gardens on which food gardeners from around the world are profiling their gardens and connecting with each other to trade seeds, knowledge and general inspiration. The site aims to make it easier for anyone anywhere to start a food garden by offering information on what grows in your area, when and how to plant it. The Dinner Garden will be using WFG for gardening information. We will also be passing on garden locations to them, so they can put the gardens on their map!

Seeds for Food collects seeds from tropical fruits and vegetables. These seeds come from the food you eat. For example, you eat an orange, save the seeds, then ship them to Seeds for Food. They distribute them worldwide, so people in need can plant gardens. What a great idea!

The Patio Farmers GuildPatio Farmers Guild provides an online community for anyone interested in patio farming, self-sufficiency, urban homesteading, food preservation, the revival of lost arts and any number of related topics.
