Projects - Seeds for School Kids
The Dinner Garden is working with states all over the country to provide seed packs to children in need through school programs, food banks, and social organizations. Our hope is that children and their parents will learn the joy of producing food at home. The food they grow will reduce their food expenses and improve their diets.
Seeds for School Kids in Arkansas
The Dinner Garden has teamed up with the Arkansas Rice Depot to provide seed packs to 25,000 Arkansas children in 600 schools across that state. It is part of their Food for Kids program. In this program, the Arkansas Rice Depot gives new backpacks filled with ready to eat food, school supplies, personal care products and other items to participating schools. These schools then distribute the backpacks to students in need.
We will be giving 25,000 Dinner Garden seed packs to the Arkansas Rice Depot to include in these backpacks. The seed packs will include seeds for 5 to 6 different fruits or vegetables, for example, tomatoes, corn, carrots, cucumbers, cowpeas, and cantaloupe. The packs will also have our contact information, so the children and their parents can explore dinnergarden.org for gardening information and request additional seeds, if the need arises.
We will accomplish three things with this project. First, with our seeds and gardening information, these children and their parents can grow much needed produce to eat, which will reduce their food budgets. Second, these families will have our contact information, so they can request additional seeds and advice in the future. Finally, we will create new gardeners throughout Arkansas. This skill will be invaluable for the kids and their parents, as it is a way to supplement their food resources and improve their standard of living for the rest of their lives.
To complete this project, we need $4562. This will cover seeds, bags for packing the seeds, inserts, and shipping. Seeds account for 46% of this cost, so any donated seeds help us complete this project.
We need your help with this project! We realize the total cost of this program is a lot. Consider this:
- $.25 pays for 1 child's seed pack
- $2.50 pays for 10 children's seed packs
- $10.00 pays for the seed packs for the children in one Arkansas school
- $25 pays for 100 children's seed packs
- $250 pays for 1000 children's seed packs
